The Italian edition aired on Italia 1 from 5 November 2001 and then continue on Italia 2 in 2012; initially titled All'arrembaggio !, the series has had several changes of name over the seasons, until settling on the original One Piece. Toei Animation also produced 13 television specials, 14 anime films, two 3D short films, an ONA and an OAV. Several companies have drawn merchandise of various kinds, such as soundtracks, video games and toys.

One Piece has enjoyed an extraordinary success. Several volumes of the manga hit sales and initial run records in Japan. With over 490 million copies in circulation by 2021, it is the manga that has sold the most in the world. On June 15, 2015 it also entered the Guinness Book of Records as a comic series drawn by a single author with the highest number of copies published: over 320 million.
